Pump Station Drainage Construction Case Study

Improving the pump station drainage included adding adequate secondary containment, stormwater drainage, permanent erosion, and sediment control in order to protect a midwest refinery's assets. Above ground piping structures were in the detention area and suscepticle to structual damage from standing water through the freeze/thaw cycles so quick remediation was needed.

PROJECT SPECIFICATION

Improvements included a new secondary containment pond with an earth berm and liner; pond outlet structure with a post indicator valve and inverted siphone overflow bypass; and riprap channels for pond inlet and outlet drainage. In addition, a fence was constructed around the pond for safe operation.

PROJECT PLANNING

Developing a plan that would ensure long term protection required an experienced team in both design and construction details. Success of the project started with a thorough inspection of the asset surroundings and predicted stormwater volume so that the design was robust enough to handle even the biggest storm systems. The LSC team went above and beyond and evaluated corrosion potential to propose a cathodic protection plan that would ensure a more comprehensive asset integrity plan.

MEETING SCHEDULES AND BUDGET

Consistent communication was key to ensuring the project would be completed on time and within budget. Our project manager worked closely with the client's project manager to ensure they were always aware of the project status.

QUALITY

Hydrology calculations were performed by field-experienced experts in managing stormwater drainage in similar environments. LSC's combination of water and facilities expertise provided a comprehensive evaluation of the operating conditions of these critical assets.
